The Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS), University of Fukui (UF), has concluded an Academic Agreement with Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in the U.S. in 2019, and has deepened exchange of students, residents and researchers. The two universities extended the Academic Agreement on December 5 to further strengthen exchanges.
The relationship between Rutgers and UF goes back to KUSAKABE Taro, a retainer of Fukui Domain, who was sent to study at Rutgers as one of Japan’s first overseas students on the eve of the Meiji Restoration. William E. Griffis, who tutored KUSAKABE in Latin, was invited by the Domain of Fukui to teach science at the clan school Meishinkan. The two universities have engaged in exchanges in education, research, student study abroad, and mutual visits between the presidents.
Professor UEDA Takanori, President of the UF, said, “I am pleased that our efforts to date have borne fruit and that we can renew our agreement with the RWJMS, Rutgers University,” while Professor NAIKI Hironobu, Vice President, said, “I hope that our exchange will further develop as we once again enter an era of student mobility in the post-COVID”. Professor FUJIEDA Shigeharu, Dean of the FMS, said, “I hope that our students will travel to the U.S. to gain experience and work from a global perspective.” And Professor SADA Kiyonao, Associate Dean in charge of international exchange at the FMS, expressed his desire to deepen not only student exchange, but also researcher exchange.
